tululPETALING JAYA: The government has decided to end the price controls on chicken eggs and reduce the subsidies from 10 sen to 5 sen per egg, effective tomorrow.
In a statement, the agriculture and food security ministry said the subsidy for chicken eggs would be fully removed from Aug 1.

“This decision was made after taking into account the industry’s commitment to ensuring sufficient and stable egg production, as production costs have stabilised.

“This was evident during the recent Aidilfitri festive season, where supply remained adequate and prices were competitive,” it said.

The ministry said that to minimise the impact of the decision, it would collaborate with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry for the introduction of a special grade of egg at an affordable price.

It also said that consumers could continue to buy eggs at competitive prices through Agro Madani Sales and Rahmah Sales programmes nationwide.

The new energy label coming to smartphones sold in the EU /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/consumer-digest/1937-the-new-energy-label-coming-to-smartphones-sold-in-the-eu /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/consumer-digest/1937-the-new-energy-label-coming-to-smartphones-sold-in-the-eu

From June 20, 2025, all smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union will have to carry a new energy label. This initiative aims to inform consumers about the energy efficiency, durability and repairability of the devices they buy, while encouraging manufacturers to design increasingly environmentally-friendly products.

This measure stems from a European Commission regulation dated June 16, 2023. It is part of the wider framework of the European Green Deal, which seeks to promote a more circular and sustainable economy.

As detailed by the EU, this energy label will display a host of key information, starting with the smartphone or tablet's energy efficiency rating, from A (best performance) to G (worst performance). On the same label, consumers will be able to find the estimated battery life (in hours and minutes) and the battery endurance, or its expected lifespan in number of charge cycles.

The label will also specify the device's durability, resistance to dust and water, and repairability index, ranging from A (highly repairable) to E (not very repairable). Finally, a QR code will give consumers access to an online database containing detailed information on the product and its battery composition.

The aim of this label is to inform consumers about the performance and durability of the device they wish to purchase. Ultimately, the idea is to reduce the environmental footprint of these devices by encouraging the purchase of energy-efficient, easy-to-repair models. The label will be required for all smartphones and tablets sold in the EU from June 20. – AFP Relaxnews

vaping vapePETALING JAYA: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) has stressed that protecting public health should take precedence over concerns from vape dealers over potential economic losses from bans.

In a statement, Fomca said plans by several states to ban the sale of vape-related products marked a progressive step towards fulfilling the country’s responsibility under the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), a public health treaty ratified by 181 countries.

Malaysia acceded to the convention in 2005 and remains committed to achieving the FCTC’s target of reducing the use of smoking products to below 5% by 2040, said Fomca.

“Global experience has shown that the partial regulation of smoking products is insufficient to achieve significant reductions in the burden of smoking-related diseases. Therefore, the ban on vape sales must continue, supported by firm and consistent enforcement actions,” said Fomca.

State governments should ban the sale of vape products through local councils, as they are becoming more popular among children due to their accessibility and flashy advertising. NSTP FILE PICKUALA LUMPUR: State governments should ban the sale of vape products through local councils, as they are becoming more popular among children due to their accessibility and flashy advertising.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) secretary-general Saravanan Thambirajah said banning the sale of vape products was long overdue.

He said that there had been many complaints from parents and educators that children were exposed to nicotine and sometimes synthetic drugs through vaping at a young age.

"This poses a grave public health concern. Addiction is developing at a young age, and the long-term consequences on brain development, learning and general wellbeing are substantial.

"We are no longer in a position to just study the issue. Action is needed now," he said while calling on other state governments to follow in the footsteps of the Johor government in banning the sale of the product.

KUALA LUMPUR: Online fraud involving e-finance crimes, love scams, e-commerce, telecommunications, loans and non-existent investments increased between 1.6% and 19.8% in the first quarter of the year, compared with the last quarter of 2024.

Acting Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Deputy Comm Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa said losses amounting to RM573.7mil involving 12,110 cases were recorded between January and March this year.

“E-commerce crime cases recorded the highest increase of 19.8% with 2,535 cases, followed by telecommunications crime at 17.1% involving 5,214 cases.

“The highest increase recorded in the e-commerce crime category is closely linked to the increase in online purchasing activities by consumers, especially in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration,” DCP Rohaimi said.

Although the overall number of online fraud cases recorded an increase, he said, total losses involving e-finance crimes, love scams, e-commerce crimes and non-existent loans decreased between 1.8% and 24.8%.

Hospital PharmacyConsumer NGOs question the need for secrecy if the current medicine pricing and margins are ethical and fair.

PETALING JAYA: The private healthcare sector must embrace transparency or risk losing the public’s trust, says a coalition of consumer groups as the government moves to mandate drug price displays at private clinics and hospitals.

The coalition of 21 NGOs led by the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca), the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) and the Third World Network expressed its full support for the policy set for enforcement from May 1.

They questioned the need for secrecy if the pricing and margins are ethical and fair.

“Let consumers see, compare and choose. This is what a mature, fair and competitive health sector looks like,” said the coalition in a joint statement today.

They rejected claims that the health and domestic trade and cost of living ministries lacked industry understanding, arguing that both ministries are the most qualified authorities to regulate Malaysian healthcare.

Online 'steals' and deals that rob you blind: Fomca urges Malaysians to wise upKUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians have been warned to stay alert amid the rising tide of online scams disguised as "investment" opportunities" or shopping deals that seem too good to be true.

Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) vice-president Datuk Indrani Thuraisingham said scammers typically baited victims with schemes or deals promising quick gains or huge savings with no risks.

These scams are often made to appear believable by linking them to clone websites.

Indrani said there were ads that promised RM10,000 in returns within 24 hours for a RM200 investment and "instant loan approvals".

"These scammers often ask victims to transfer money into personal accounts, using urgency like 'limited time only' to pressure quick action," she said, adding that many such schemes exploited the anonymity of online platforms and weak user awareness.

Unfair warranty policies: Time for stronger consumer protection in Malaysia /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/fomca-di-pentas-media-2025/1928-unfair-warranty-policies-time-for-stronger-consumer-protection-in-malaysia /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/fomca-di-pentas-media-2025/1928-unfair-warranty-policies-time-for-stronger-consumer-protection-in-malaysia

Is A Lifetime Warranty 100% Guaranteed or Misleading? - RetailWireDespite the existence of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, most consumers don’t realise that such disclaimers may actually violate their basic rights.

Buying a new product should bring peace of mind—not a legal headache. But in Malaysia, the confidence consumers place in warranties is all too often misplaced. From denied claims to ambiguous “no return” policies, many Malaysians are finding out the hard way that warranty protections are weak, uneven, and poorly enforced.

When “warranty” means nothing

You buy a brand-new bed, backed by a one-year warranty.

Within months, it starts falling apart—not from misuse, but from shoddy installation. You show the evidence.

The seller? Ghosts your messages, shrugs off your claim, and stalls until the warranty runs out.

No inspection. No action. Just silence. In the end: no repair, no refund.

Warranty? Worthless. Your money? History.

This isn’t a horror story—it’s a real complaint filed with the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) in March 2025.

And unfortunately, it’s just one of many stories where "guaranteed peace of mind" turns into a consumer nightmare.

In retail shops and online platforms alike, “No warranty, no return” is still treated as a standard business clause in Malaysia.

And despite the existence of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, most consumers don’t realise that such disclaimers may actually violate their basic rights.

KTMBKeretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s admission that the extra RM5 charge is part of its Flexi Fare pricing system proves it is a hidden cost, says the consumer body.

PETALING JAYA: The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) has doubled down on its claim that Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) is imposing “hidden” charges on rail commuters.
The consumer body’s president N Marimuthu said KTMB’s response to complaints by senior citizens and the disabled reinforced its contention that an overall fare increase had been put in place without any public announcement.

“KTMB says the RM5 fee is included in all its ticket purchases under its Flexi Fare pricing system, which adjusts ticket prices based on various factors for all modes of purchases. This is in fact a hidden price.

“The disabled man, who was charged RM5 for each of his three ticket purchases over-the-counter, paid the amount on top of the overall fare,” he told FMT.

Free Malaysia TodayPETALING JAYA: The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) has slammed Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) for imposing an additional RM5 fee on travellers who purchase their tickets over the counter at railway stations.

Fomca president N Marimuthu said levying a fee for all over-the-counter purchases was unacceptable, and that insisting that disabled Malaysians and senior citizens also pay the RM5 charge per ticket was “extremely heartless”.

“We have received a few complaints about this over the last two weeks. They were told that they should download the KTMB app if they want to avoid the fee.

“Are the officers joking? How would a visually disabled person use an app? What makes matters worse is that others cannot use the app to book tickets for the disabled and senior citizens.

“Why is it so difficult to accommodate these groups of Malaysians, who do not comprise a big number overall? This is totally unacceptable to the most vulnerable groups of Malaysians,” he told FMT.

Marimuthu said he was told that KTMB had invested a lot of money in upgrading its infrastructure and introducing online services, and thus wanted to recoup its capital expenditure.

PETALING JAYA: After years of fighting the scourge of counterfeit engine oil, the authorities are now cracking down on the slippery offenders.

The Trade Descriptions Order (Certification and Marking of Engine Oil for Motor Vehicles) 2024 came into force on Monday, allowing consumers to identify genuine motor vehicle engine oil from the many fake products in the market.

Interest groups say the move will protect consumers, while helping authorities curb the sale of counterfeit oils.

The order was actually gazetted on Oct 11 last year but the government had given manufacturers six months to comply with the directives.

Under this directive, those looking to supply motor vehicle engine oil have to make an application to SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, as the competent authority, to obtain certification and conformity label.

Engine oil here refers to oil used for lubrication of internal combustion engine motor vehicles.

ADDRESSING HIDDEN HOSPITAL CHARGES: ENHANCING TRANSPARENCY IN MALAYSIA'S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM /v1/index.php/59-press-release/1922-addressing-hidden-hospital-charges-enhancing-transparency-in-malaysia-s-healthcare-system /v1/index.php/59-press-release/1922-addressing-hidden-hospital-charges-enhancing-transparency-in-malaysia-s-healthcare-system

In January 2025, Azrul Mohd Khalib who is the Chief Executive of the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy, highlighted that an estimated 70% of private hospital charges remain unregulated. This means that hospitals have the liberty to set arbitrary prices for a range of items and services, including essential medical equipment such as wheelchairs, heart monitors, and even emesis basins. Only 30% of hospital bills are regulated, primarily covering specialist fees and medication. This lack of oversight has led to numerous cases where patients unknowingly pay excessive sum of medical bills for items that should otherwise be reasonably priced.

Hidden hospital charges, often labelled as profiteering, are a widespread problem in Malaysia. For example, a simple medical glove that costs RM5 per pair might be billed at RM20. In most cases, this creates an unjust financial burden on patients who pay these inflated charges without question. The issue arises primarily because patients rarely scrutinise their medical bills, either due to a lack of knowledge or because they assume that everything charged is legitimate. As a result, they end up shouldering excessive costs without the ability to challenge these expenses.

One of the most alarming aspects of hidden hospital charges is the suppression of information. Some hospitals use this tactic to increase their revenue without the patient's awareness. A notable NCCC’s case involves Complainant B and Hospital C, where Complainant B’s daughter, a minor under 12 years old, was diagnosed with a cervical cyst. The hospital proceeded with numerous procedures without informing Complainant B that certain treatments were not covered under his company's insurance.

Complainant B, who relied on a Guarantee Letter issued by his company, believed that all medical expenses would be covered. However, despite knowing which procedures were claimable and which were not, the hospital failed to communicate this crucial information. The bulk of the hospital bill was covered by insurance, yet Complainant B was left with an out-of-pocket expense of RM5,000. Following several rounds of negotiation, the hospital agreed to reduce the amount to RM3,500 after a discount. Nevertheless, Complainant B found this sum to be substantial, reinforcing the reality that many patients face when dealing with unexpected hospital charges.

Malaysia's current healthcare system lacks a clear mechanism for patients to challenge such costs, unlike in countries that have implemented price transparency regulations. For instance, the United States of America has introduced the Hospital Price Transparency Rule on 1 January 2021 which makes it a requirement for hospitals to publicly disclose a list of their standard charges for various services. This rule enables patients to compare hospital prices before seeking treatment and allowing them to make informed financial decisions regarding their medical care. Similarly, Singapore is set to introduce the Health Information Bill in mid-2024, which will improve transparency in healthcare pricing and data management. The country also has a robust regulatory system where medical costs in public hospitals are monitored, and pricing is often published online, allowing patients to compare treatment costs across different hospitals.

TKS Yugendran from Bait Al-Amanah and Nazari Ismail of Universiti Malaya rate the risk of such an outcome at the global level as “very high” but Nazari’s colleague Goh Lim Thye believes it will come to pass only if tension builds up.

Yugendran said the tariffs will raise costs for the average American, leading to a drop in disposable income.

“This raises the possibility of a drop in consumer and business confidence. This will trigger a recession (in the US) that will eventually spread across the globe,” he told FMT Business.

“The US is just hurting itself with the tariffs,” he said, noting that financial institutions such as JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs shared the same sentiment.

Free Malaysia TodayThe Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Women and Single Mothers Association says this will support child development.

PETALING JAYA: A single mothers’ organisation has proposed that the government include fresh produce and baby items in the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Women and Single Mothers Association president Sheilla Tukimin suggested that beneficiaries of the initiative be allowed to redeem items such as diapers, fish, chicken, and vegetables to meet their daily needs.

Sheilla said the proposal was aimed at supporting children’s growth, focusing on hygiene care, and encouraging healthy eating habits.

“It would be better if the government expanded the range of items that can be redeemed as each family has different needs,” she said.

“If possible, fresh produce should also be allowed as many families in the B40 and M40 groups cook at home. I urge the government to consider this.”

The SARA programme allows recipients to use their MyKads for the purchase of essential items at participating supermarkets and retail stores nationwide.

Pix for visual purposes onlyRipple effects will be felt as businesses adjust to declining revenue and rising costs: Consumers association

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian consumers may face price increases on everyday goods as a result of the new 24% US tariff on Malaysian exports, warned Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca).

Its CEO and secretary-general Dr Saravanan Thambirajah said while the tariff directly impacts exports, its ripple effects would be felt by local consumers as businesses adjust to declining revenue and rising costs.

“Exporters struggling to compete in the US market may try to shift excess stock or production costs to the domestic market.

“Logistics expenses could rise due to decreased export volumes or rerouted trade routes, further driving up prices.”

The products most affected would be those tied to export-driven industries, including electronics, palm oil-based products, rubber goods and processed foods.

For instance, items such as televisions, laptops, washing machines, cooking oil, soaps, medical gloves, tyres and food products relying on imported ingredients may see price hikes.

(Click To Enlarge)PETALING JAYA: Medical devices such as blood pressure monitors are designed for clinical use and typically require regular calibration as recommended by the manufacturers, says the Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS).

This was in reference to complaints of inaccurate readings by some devices including unauthorised ones being sold online.

“There have been documented cases where inaccurate readings led to inappropriate health decisions, especially in the management of chronic conditions like heart disease or diabetes, where readings directly impact treatment,” said MPS president Prof Amrahi Buang.

In some instances, he said, wearable devices have even been reported to interfere with implanted devices such as pacemakers.

“While these incidents are not widespread, they highlight the importance of accuracy, certification and user education when using health monitoring gadgets,” he said when contacted.

As for devices that are sold online, he said these gadgets are relatively safe provided that they are certified by the Malaysian health authorities.

“It can be safe if consumers are careful. All medical devices in Malaysia must be registered with the Medical Device Authority (MDA), so consumers should look for certification.

Fomca calls for increased oversight as SARA expands to 5.4 million beneficiaries /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/fomca-di-pentas-media-2025/1915-fomca-calls-for-increased-oversight-as-sara-expands-to-5-4-million-beneficiaries /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/fomca-di-pentas-media-2025/1915-fomca-calls-for-increased-oversight-as-sara-expands-to-5-4-million-beneficiaries

Fomca says retailers and government agencies must collaborate to ensure adequate supply for SARA beneficiaries.

Fomca calls for increased oversight as SARA expands to 5.4 million beneficiaries | FMTPETALING JAYA: The authorities have been urged to monitor the 3,500 premises involved in the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme to ensure that the supply of goods is always sufficient and to guarantee the effectiveness of the initiative.

The Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) said the increased number of SARA beneficiaries – 5.4 million compared to 700,000 previously – should be able to redeem items easily.

The SARA programme allows recipients to use their MyKads for the purchase of essential items at participating supermarkets and retail stores nationwide.

The finance ministry has said that households eligible for the assistance will receive up to RM2,100 each for the entire year, a 75% increase from RM1,200 last year.

Fomca CEO T Saravanan said the association welcomed the government’s initiative, which would not only alleviate the cost of living but also increase purchasing power.

However, he said the success of the programme in ensuring that those in need can purchase basic goods required close collaboration between retailers and government agencies.

“A shortage of supply due to increased demand could disrupt the smooth operation of the programme,” he said.

Urging retailers to work with suppliers and the related agencies to ensure the proper management of stock and logistics, Saravanan said that price monitoring should also be enhanced.

Read the label first as product may contain mercury /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/consumer-digest/1914-read-the-label-first-as-product-may-contain-mercury /v1/index.php/fomca-di-pentas-media/consumer-digest/1914-read-the-label-first-as-product-may-contain-mercury

Mercury in Skin-Lightening Products – Worthee CosmeticsPETALING JAYA: Exercise caution when buying skincare and cosmetics, as those containing dangerous ingredients can be a health hazard, say medical experts.

They cautioned that mercury is a common ingredient found in products flagged by the Health Ministry.

Dr Chin Shih Choon, past president of the Malaysian Society of Aesthetic Medicine, said skincare products containing mercury posed serious health risks due to its toxic effects on the body.

Such products could cause skin and kidney damage, neurological effects, respiratory issues, hormonal disruptions and environmental contamination, he said.

“Pregnant women using mercury-containing products risk passing the toxin to their unborn child, which lead to developmental issues, brain damage and birth defects. Breast-fed infants may also be exposed through contaminated milk,” he said.

Dr Chin said to be safe, one should always choose skincare products that comply with regulatory standards and avoid those containing mercury or its compounds such as mercuric chloride, calomel and mercurous chloride.

“If you suspect mercury exposure, discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice. Consult a dermatologist or aesthetic doctor before using new skincare products, especially if they claim fast whitening or anti-ageing effects.
