260402 fomca logoThe Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) supports the call by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for Malaysians to brace for an increasingly challenging global energy landscape. The current situation is shaped by factors beyond Malaysia’s control, including geopolitical tensions, global supply disruptions, and volatility in fuel and energy markets, all of which are contributing to rising costs worldwide.

FOMCA acknowledges that these developments will inevitably affect the cost of living, particularly through higher fuel prices, electricity tariffs, and the prices of goods and services. In facing these pressures, Malaysians must remain calm, resilient, and patient as the country navigates this period of uncertainty.

At the same time, FOMCA emphasises that the government is actively taking steps to cushion the impact on consumers. Measures such as the capping of fuel prices under programmes like Budi95, along with targeted subsidies and assistance, are important interventions to ensure that global price increases do not fully burden the rakyat. These efforts reflect the government’s commitment to protecting consumers while managing broader economic realities.

Equally important is the need for strong and proactive enforcement. FOMCA stresses that authorities must continue to be vigilant on the ground by monitoring supply chains and price movements to prevent profiteering and unjustified price hikes. Continuous inspections and enforcement actions are necessary to ensure that traders act fairly and that consumers are not exploited during this challenging period.

FOMCA also calls on businesses to act responsibly. Price adjustments must be justified, transparent, and not used as an opportunity to increase profits unfairly. In times of global uncertainty, ethical business practices are critical in maintaining public trust and ensuring that the burden is shared equitably.

Moving forward, resilience must be a shared national effort. Consumers, businesses, and the government all have a role to play in adapting to the evolving energy landscape. Consumers can contribute by practising prudent spending and adopting energy-efficient habits, while policymakers must continue to implement balanced and people-centric measures.

Malaysia has faced significant challenges before. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysians demonstrated remarkable unity and resilience by standing together and supporting one another. Today, FOMCA calls on all Malaysians to once again berganding bahuβ€”to stand shoulder to shoulderβ€”in facing these new global challenges.

While the road ahead may be difficult, with cooperation, discipline, and collective responsibility, Malaysia will be able to navigate this period and emerge stronger. FOMCA remains committed to safeguarding consumer interests and will continue to work closely with the government and stakeholders to ensure that no consumer is left behind.

FOMCA PUBLIC ADVISORY: MANAGING RISING COST OF LIVING AMID GLOBAL CONFLICTS

FOMCA wishes to advise all consumers to remain vigilant and adopt prudent financial practices in light of rising global uncertainties. Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are contributing to increases in fuel prices, transportation costs, and consequently, the prices of goods and services.

While these developments are largely beyond individual control, consumers can take proactive steps to reduce their financial burden and protect household wellbeing.

Key Advice to Consumers:

1. Prioritise Essential Spending
Focus on necessities such as food, utilities, healthcare, and education. Avoid unnecessary or impulsive purchases.

2. Adopt Smart Food Management
Choose local products where possible, plan meals carefully, and minimise food waste. Substitute high-cost items with more affordable alternatives.

3. Reduce Transportation Costs
Use public transport, carpool, and plan trips efficiently to conserve fuel.

4. Practice Energy Efficiency
Lower electricity and water usage by adopting energy-saving habits at home.

5. Strengthen Financial Resilience
Track expenses, avoid unnecessary debt, and build emergency savings to cushion against future uncertainties.

6. Be Vigilant Against Unfair Price Increases
Consumers are encouraged to compare prices and report unjustified price hikes or profiteering to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

7. Support Community Initiatives
Participate in cooperative buying, community support systems, and consumer advocacy efforts.

FOMCA calls upon all stakeholders, including businesses and authorities, to act responsibly and ensure fair pricing practices during this challenging period.

Consumers must remain informed, calm, and disciplined. Collective action and responsible consumption are key to navigating the current economic pressures.
